Naomi Makemie Presbyterian Church Onancock, Virginia
We are a Church with
The primary focus of our church mission work is local charities and non profits working to improve the life of residents on the Eastern Shore. A substantial portion of the Eastern Shore population has needs being met by nonprofit organizations and charities. Blessed with a small trust endowment, the church is able to help these groups. The Mission Committee also conducts one major annual fund raiser to provide additional financial support. Last year we held a food sale during Onancock’s Super Saturday Event.
In addition to periodic gifts to these groups, shown below, the church makes a major gift each year to truly make a difference for one of the Shore’s charitable organizations. One example is the time and financial help provided for a major renovation of the shelter for individuals faced with domestic violence. Another example is a major gift to support the construction of a new building for the Community Health Center, which provides affordable health care for anyone.
The Accomac Interfaith Crisis Council (AICC) was formed by an interdenominational group of local churches. AICC assists those in serious need of help with utility bills and/or heating. Many of our church members serve as volunteers in operating this charity.
The Coalition Against Domestic Violence (CADV) offers a program to help those abused by domestic violence. CADV also maintains a shelter to house those trying to leave a domestic violent situation. The Mission Committee is frequently called upon to help maintain the shelter.
The Foodbank provides food stuffs for those truly in need.
The Lighthouse Ministries maintains housing for homeless families until they are able to get back on their feet.
The Literacy Council is focused on teaching adults to read and write. This includes adults working on GEDs, those for whom English is a second language, and others who want to improve their reading and writing skills.
The Eastern Shore Presbyterian Ministries (ESPM)was formed by the 5 Presbyterian Churches on the Eastern shore. ESPM provides much needed school
supplies to all the elementary schools on the shore. The program has grown to include support from other churches and individuals. The annual purchase and distribution of supplies has become a major event in the life of
our Eastern Shore
