Narrative Questions

Brief description of your church/organization programs or accomplishments:

Programs: We are excited about our mission outreach programs supporting eight local charities! Our newest program, with other Presbyterian churches, provides school supplies for local needy elementary kids. Other mission efforts include prayer shawl ministry, community VBS, Dove/Angel tree and Operation Christmas Child. Two active PW groups meet monthly. Several other fellowship programs (supper club, weekly social hour, and special holiday functions) foster a friendly, nurturing environment and help deepen the bonds in our church family.

Accomplishments: Both churches are contemplating or have completed construction projects: NMPC-steeple reconstruction, interior refurbishments and stained glass window restoration; MPC–new organ and fellowship hall addition. NMPC attendance has grown over the past decade. Both churches have doubled contributions to local missions/PCUSA in the past 2 years.

Community setting: Named after Eastern Shore residents Francis Makemie (founder of the first American Presbytery) and his wife Naomi, the churches are situated between the Atlantic Ocean and the Chesapeake Bay in a beautiful and historical area. Our locale is ideal for raising families and is a popular retirement area. Outdoor activities are abundant-the proximity of the water is a key attribute. We enjoy many cultural activities including local theater, museums, orchestra, colleges and art guilds. While delightfully rural, we are convenient to several major cities

Gifts, skills, and experiences your congregation possesses to fulfill its mission:

We are two congregations with a wealth of leadership and talent. Many of our members are well-educated, retired professionals with diverse abilities and interests. Most of the church programs are member-directed and driven. As a result, during times of pastoral absence, we have remained strong in all aspects of congregational life and have continued to grow. Our perseverance has kept our churches thriving during the times when we have not had a pastor. NMPC’s volunteer choir sings every Sunday and performs in a number of annual community events. Our worship committee plans special holiday services and creative presentations. NMPC’s Sheppard’s Program provides strong support program for the entire congregation. The mission committee’s self-generated community outreach program is nothing short of inventive. Other local churches have even joined in our outreach programs.

We are proud of being a loving fellowship that embraces diverse political and theological convictions.

Directed by the membership, both church buildings have had extensive improvements and remain well maintained.

Key theological issues of our church and society that are reflected in the ministry of your congregation/organization:

The members of our congregations have diverse viewpoints, histories and backgrounds. Some are local; others have relocated from urban areas, bringing with them many different viewpoints and Christian backgrounds. We appreciate our diversity and work to insure that all feel welcome. Our congregations value the skills, ideas and opinions of all our members, but we are of one spirit.

Our churches have a firm commitment to reaching out to the needy in our local communities. We are involved in many local ecumenical programs that include outreach programs, community Vacation Bible School, multi church Lenten Programs, and mission projects. We have an open door policy for community groups to use our facilities. In fact, MPC’s doors are literally open – the church door has never been locked! NMPC is home to a local “Odyssey of the Mind” school program and other community groups.

While we are proud that Presbyterianism on the Eastern Shore dates back over 300 years, and the heritage of our churches over 160 years, we are focused on the future of our congregations and our community. We desire to continue to grow in our faith and service. Both churches desire programs that will continue to expand our understanding of the Christian faith. We believe that the most important hour of the week is when we gather to return praise to God.

We are friendly churches, and we gladly embrace individuals and pastors from a variety of backgrounds.

Position Description
  1. Major Responsibilities:
Our minister will help shape and inspire our vision as well as share our dreams, channel our energy and focus our enthusiasm as we move towards attaining our church mission and goals. We seek a minister who will become part of our church family and our community. A vital part of our community is the Eastern Shore cluster of Presbyterian churches, whose pastors gather regularly.

Our new minister will assist the two church sessions and congregations in reaching our potential and fulfilling our capabilities to serve God in our community. He or she will foster individual spiritual growth.

He or she must have excellent worship leadership skills including first-rate preaching ability. He or she will perform faithful pastoral care of our blended congregations and competently execute all normal traditional pastoral duties.

In summary, our churches seek a pastor who challenges and motivates our congregations. We anticipate that our new pastor will lead our congregations to better understand our responsibilities to God, our community and one another. Our pastor should promote harmony within our churches and our community, and pursue interfaith activities with other churches. He or she will encourage and equip us to accomplish our Churches’ vision in missions and goals.

  2. Description of characteristics and qualifications needed in a person who would fill this position:
    Passionate! Joyful!

The ideal minister for our Churches is compassionate, intelligent and has a sense of humor; a person who preaches and teaches from the heart to inspire, enrich and lead our congregations in loving fellowship.

We seek an intelligent, thoughtful person who keeps abreast of modern scholarship and can communicate well. We seek a pastor who is willing to share her or his talent, wisdom and energy with our congregations and our communities.

A minister who shares our enthusiasm for outdoor activities (golf, birding, kayaking, boating, fishing, and hunting) and cultural events (theater, music concerts, arts & crafts shows) will find the Eastern Shore most attractive.

We seek a sincere person who can listen with his or her heart and respond with God’s love. We seek an individual with appeal for retirees, families and working professionals.
