Tower Rebuilding
In 2002, we discovered that the tower (holding
the steeple) was riddled with old, non-active termite damage. In October
of that year reconstruction was begun.
The damage was sufficient to require the complete removal of the tower.
The steeple itself was salvageable. A crane lifted
the steeple off the tower and placed it on the neighbor's yard where
it stayed until it was refurbished with new shingles and with all painted
surfaces replaced with vinyl or aluminum.
While removing the old siding during the demolition portion, we discovered
louvered windows on all four sides that had been covered at some time in
the past. These were saved and covered with vinyl and installed in
the new tower.
Rather than simply rebuild the tower in its old location, it was moved a
few feet away from the main building which allowed us to install a new handicapped
lift and slightly enlarge the Narthex.
Since the roof was showing signs of age, we decided to get it all
done at once. All construction was completed in early 2004.
In order to accomplish all of this, we had a 5 year capital fund
drive and obtained a loan. We are very proud that the loan was fully
paid as of January 2005 - two years ahead of schedule.
